Yes, there is a workaround. The problem lies in an incorrect z-index.

-1- Go to your App_Themes folder
-2- Edit the Skin.skin file and add an extra css-class to the DynamicMenuStyle of the asp:net control:

E.g.: <DynamicMenuStyle CssClass="sublevel ie8fix" />

-3- Edit the Navigation.css file and add an extra css-class. E.g.:

.ie8fix
{
     z-index: 999;
}

Don't forget to force an extra refresh of your webpage by giving a Ctrl + F5.

My solution to fix this problem:
add/modify meta-tag in master page (file site.master)

<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7" /> ... tested in IE8 BETA

(in mwpsk 1.2.2 is .... content="IE=7" ..., but this not work)

jGvraaij's workaround is a better solution than forcing everything to emulate IE7. Changing the z-index is how I solved this problem too. Instead of creating a new CSS-class .... i just added the z-index to the existing css Navigation.css stylesheet. No need to modify the skin.skin file this way. Either way ... it works.

I changed these sections of my Navigation.css stylesheet to include the z-index

div.sublevelwrapper
{
background-color: #3366ff;
background-attachment: scroll;
background-repeat: repeat-x;
background-position: left top;
z-index: 1;
}

a.sublevel, a.sublevel:link, a.sublevel:active, a.sublevel:visited, a.sublevel:hover
{
padding: 5px;
display: block;
height: 100%;
width: 100%;
color: #B0CBD7;
z-index: 1;
}

a.sublevel:hover
{
color: #FFFFFF;
z-index: 1;
}

a.sublevel_selected, a.sublevel_selected:link, a.sublevel_selected:active, a.sublevel_selected:visited, a.sublevel_selected:hover
{
font-weight: bold;
color: #FFFFFF;
z-index: 1;
}
